This thread aims to cover the ever-changing relationship between Monaco and Russia. I'd like to level the discussion by bringing up the pre-Communist times when Russians like Serge Diaghilev had a cultural impact on Monaco going back several decades. Diaghilev was a friend of Russian aristocrats and is behind the Ballets Russes in Europe. It's now a full-circle with Monaco teeming with Russian oligarchs whose financial success has been tied to proximity with the Communist leader. With Albert having campaigned somewhat for the Olympics in Russia, the purported gift of a dacha by Putin... this should be an interesting topic since now French blue-bloods team up with their Russian girlfriends to usher a new era at least in the world of fundraising, and the US still consider Monaco an ideologically friendly place. Is Monaco going to be the breeding ground of détente or ...? Over to you guys! Monaco-Russia Relation wiki

I wonder how that IOC guy who gave such a blow-hard speech at Sochi feels today after all that sanctimony on behalf of Russia when Putin hardly waits for the Olympics to be over to make a underhanded move on Ukraine? Losers, both of them. Is that the spirit of competition? Attack the weak? They make me want to spit at the last Olympics.

Garry Kasparov nailed this one (other publications picked it up as well): www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/feb/07/sochi-vladimir-putin-hitler-berlin-garry-kasparovThe Olympics will NEVER be the same. i feel bad for the kids in training for what has turned out to be a scam.

Thanks for posting that link because there they are the two, and especially the IOC guy whose name escaped me: Thomas Bach or as I call him Dumb Stupid Fuch.

One lone Ukrainian Paralympic athlete at Sochi. A world more balls, sportsmanship and fairness in one man than anything Putin & Bach could muster. Shame on Putin. Shame on the Olympic Committee's Thomas Bach. A Real Champion
