I might be wrong, but don't you have to ask permission from the parents first and then propose? I think that's how Will did it... Actually William had to ask the Queen first and then Prince Charles, and then Kate's parents. Once that was done he asked Kate. In essence, she was the last to know.

The Royal Family didn´t knew he proposed, not even his own brother. Supposedly the Queen was informed two hours before the announcement! What a Royal troll xD

Actually, Will asked Kate before he asked her father's permission. He stated in the engagement interview that he wanted to be assured she would say yes before he asked her dad.
Although the Queen and the royal family didn't know he was going to propose, William did ask the Queen's permission to marry Kate - he had to. William said that he carry the ring around for weeks, not sure when he would propose. The proposal to Kate only came after he got the Queen's permission - we just don't know when he requested that permission. I will bet anything that the permission was asked around the time there were serious mention from reliable sources that William and Kate was engaged. Someone had to leak the permission, however they didn't know that William hadn't proposed yet.
I believe that's why the Queen had made the unprecedented request to the media about protecting Kate - she knew eventually Kate was going to be a part of the family. Contrary to what the Kate haters believe, the Queen has shown in every one of her actions that she is quite found and protective of Kate - unlike she was with Diana.

Do you really believe the whole "no one didn't know" story of William and Kate? Tsk ... tsk. Someone (a Brit) with whom I used to work left the U.S. in the fall of 2010 to go work for William. It was the run-up to the announcement and the wedding in 2011. The entire thing had been planned for years. Don't buy the story ... every second of every minute of every hour of every day of the British Royals lives is planned way in advance. BTW, I do love them ... so, I'm not being sarcastic just realistic!
