To be fair, this kind of banking has always been the Grimaldi family business even back to their days in Genova. I don't believe in the history of Monaco that the people paid taxes, except when the family was reinstated after the revolution and they needed to try to recover economically the prince wanted to impose taxes for awhile--Monaco had been under Italy at the time, so a lot of those people were happy enough to secede from Monaco and stay part of Italy, rather than have to pay taxes, and that was part of the reason that Monaco lost so much of their land.

My friends in Monaco said to me that it was too hot on the wedding day. People were not able to stay in front of screens. I posted few days ago about my friends and too much sun.
I don't trust anything about economic benefits. My friends said that there is no more tourists than usual.

Wow, it's official, Albert and Charlene's wedding was the best thing that has ever happened to Monaco - tourists are flocking to Monaco in record numbers! Actually, I am being sarcastic because they really do not provide any numerical evidence to make a comparison. They are banking on that if they write it you will belive it, as with all the other article posted in here claiming how much the wedding was a success on Monaco's tourism. There are many comments from tourists who were in Monaco and stated it was empty during the wedding, a South African journalist who stated that she was surprised of so little people in Monaco to view the wedding and there are even photos of an empty Monaco. There are published comments from store and restaurants owners stating that little tourists came in to their places. But, Monaco wants all these people to believe that this wedding was a success because in the month of July there weer an 80% occupancy hotel rate. Some of Charlene's friends hotel rooms were paid for (they stated so in interviews), so how many other hotel rooms were paid for that they are included in the use of hotel room bookings for the month of July as a wedding success? From VisitMoanco:
Tourism in Monaco Record Results in July 2011
Such figures have never been seen since Monaco Tourist and Convention Authority first began keeping statistics. August 2011
An exceptional event for an exceptional month! Of course, the effect of the Princely wedding would have had a direct impact on the July results. However, apart from the guests, journalists and visitors who came to celebrate the wedding of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene on 1 and 2 July, the indirect effects of the wedding are already being felt. The Principality has 75,000 Hotel Nights available every month. In July, there was 80% occupation, at an average rate of 300 Euros per night. This represents a turnover of almost 18 million Euros for the hotel sector alone (excluding restaurants and other expenses).
Excellent figures that exceed the benchmark years of 2007 or 2008. So this year, 5,000 more Hotel Nights were marketed than in 2008. According to Michel COTTRAY, director of the Méridien Beach Plaza, "the weather conditions in Northern Europe may also have been a beneficial factor." Michaël Peries, Operations Manager at Novotel, highlights the excellent recovery in business tourism and "impressive increases in web site capability (such as Booking and Expedia) that can handle up to 150 rooms in one day. The downside is that the bookings can be made three days beforehand. In these circumstances it is difficult to plan ahead."
So is the profile of tourists changing? According to Michel COTTRAY, a tendency to more family-based clients has been noted. The Principality's tourism offer has expanded with some new concepts (including the Ni Box for young people, a lounge bar and new restaurants), which appeal to all the members of the same family.
Are the clients more family-orientated, more volatile, more opportunistic or more business-based? All the marketing departments are currently analysing the results. What is certain, and as demonstrated by the outstanding results from the Oceanographic Museum and its exhibition "The Story of the Royal Wedding" (100,000 visitors in less than a month), everyone comes to Monaco for different reasons, and each person enjoys a unique experience.

dictator speak. There is no difference visible on the streets of MC. There are no more people in bars and restaurants. And with a recession ahead of us, they will quickly see the numbers dwindle. Especially business people will cease to come. Let them rejoice in their delirium. it won't last. At least the guy from the Meridian seems to be more realistic by noting the weather in Europe.

I just saw on the news about tourism in SOuthern Europe that the past 2 years in restaurants and bars were not so good, whereas this year due to the weather they have more people and people are spending more. So I think the MC numbers have to be put into perspective here and seen more globally.

The professional from the Meridian in the article is aware of it and I guess that they are monitoring data from other areas. The bit I saw was about last minute travel mostly. France was not shown. Italy and Spain were mostly booked out destinations. It was a German channel so I guess the South of France is not on the German list of travel as much as the other destinations. It is probably a money matter as Italy and Spain are a lot cheaper in comparison. Apart from the international wealthy, the area is mostly frequented by French, British and Asian tourists. I do think that when it comes to numbers of nights, I suspect the French are the ones who really vacation here; the others only pass through, going from one town to the other, whereas the French come for the sea, the weather and the food.

So Monaco propaganda is working on full motion. Some people reading this may even believe that tourism was up because of the trashy wedding. Local people who know more, like paca, will not buy Monegasque propaganda. But e.g. Americans or other foreigners who of course know little about this area, may believe it. Now, I wonder if Albert is so stupid to believe his own propaganda? His 'advisers' may feed him stories about tourism increase in MC and tell how his 'wedding of century' has helped MC economy. It is most likely that they do this, since they were the ones who pushed Albert into this wedding. But what if Albert has already realized that there is no real economical growth because of this wedding. He must feel bitter. But I rather assume the 1st option: Albert is fed by his 'advisers' that tourism is on rise because of Monaco flagship, Charlene, and what's worse Albert believes it ;D

The propaganda is destined to the locals though. I doubt that Americans would read MC matin before coming here on vacation. NO this propaganda is supposed to make locals believe that what they see with their own eyes does not exist. That's why it is called propaganda. If it was sth that can be seen it would be called information In any case they are trying to stop the criticism by throwing sand around instead of actually doing sth. If they would put as much effort into running the country properly as they are putting into hiding, disguising, distorting and misinforming, Mc would be in a much better condition then it is right now. The problem is that those in charge only know how to deceive. oh what a tangled web they weave when they set out to deceive....

The dangerous problem with all this Save-Albert's-Fat-Arse propaganda is that they are not actually promoting the attractions in Monaco that will keep the tourists coming for years to come! Albert is only interesting in saving his fat arse about this wedding fiasco and all the image and economical benefits promises he made to the government and the people. Think about this for a moment: would it be better to advertise that record breaking people are coming to visit Monaco’s prestigious Oceanographic Museum (which they are) as opposed to promoting that people are coming to see some silly trinkets from this fiasco trashy farcical wedding (which these same people couldn’t care enough to watch on TV for free)? Wouldn’t it be better to say that record number of tourists booked hotel rooms in July because Monaco has such and such attractions to offer as opposed to promoting Monaco is receiving record number of hotels bookings because Sucker Albert and his trashy con artist gold digging bride got married? Which promotion will help out Monaco in the long run? Again, Albert is showing he cares more about this wedding – i.e. selling the after effects of his trashy wedding - than Monaco. When will this man start putting his country before his ego?
As what happened with his wedding that he kept promoting and blew up in his face, if he keeps putting out propaganda about the successful effects about his farcical wedding, it too will blow up in his face once the truth is revealed (hopefully someone will spill it).

yes of course it would be better to promote MC in a different way. But palace PR is not about promoting MC, it is about promoting Albert. It has always been about promoting the family, never about MC. PR to promote MC is the tourist office when it comes to tourists and the government would be in charge of paving the way to attract investors to come to MC. The problem is that with Rainier, all of this was united in him. He watched over the image of his family, he paved the way for investors and he promoted MC as a place for tourist, especially due to its safety. That used to be one of his major arguments for people to come to MC as residents, visitors, investors. Nowadays MC is far from being as safe as it used to be. You can easily run into fistfights at the port, which did not use to be the case. BAnks get robbed in broad daylight and never being caught in spite of the entire place being sealed off. I know of jewelry stores in the carre d'or which have been victims of robbers several times.
In contrast to Albert, no one doubted the ability of Rainier to rule. Yes he was critized, though not very loudly, but MC prospered and so did the Monegasques. They did not have existential worries about the future. That has changed. Albert doesn't know how to rule and what is worse, he doesn't hire anyone who can do the job for him.

So I think the MC numbers have to be put into perspective here and seen more globally. Exactly, Paca, The Nice/Monaco Matin wrote a front-page article about this phenomena on Saturday. Yet, Albert and his flunkies have decided to save his fat-ass by putting out propaganda that the increase in tourism (actually they have mostly focused on the increase in visits to Albert and Charlene's wedding exhibit) is because Albert and Charlene's wedding. This is bill and they know it! But, for an entire year, Albert sold his wedding as a big economic benefit to Monaco and now he is trying to save face. Any legitimate econometric/statistical analysis of the cost/benefit analysis of this wedding will have to consider the surrounding area's tourism as a control group for the counter-effect. In statistical terms, the treatment is the wedding and to measure its financial impact, you need a control group to compare - the group that did not receive the treatment. The surrounding area's tourism is a good control group since they did not receive the treatment and the other towns in the Riviera are similar to Monaco. So, if these areas did just as well - or even better - then Albert and Charlene's wedding with its $70 million+ price tag was a HUGE waste of money for Monaco.

Here's the article from the Nice Matin. They give several reasons why Riviera is experiencing an increase in tourism - and it have nothing to do with Albert and Charlene's wedding. They do mention the Oceanographic museum which probably next to the Grand Prix is Monaco's biggest tourist draw. But, Monaco decided to even side-step this draw and instead advertise that people are not coming to the museum to see the normal exhibits there, but instead are flocking to the museum to see Albert and Charlene's tacky wedding exhibit.
Tourism: why the Riviera is fullby JM Chevalier Saturday, August 13 The Promenade des Anglais in Nice
"The Riviera was an exceptional living with a peak rarely seen." Word of Michel Tschann, president of Nice hotel, which amounts to + 10% the number of holidaymakers who have chosen our area to rest. A gloomy weather over France except in the South East countries shunned because of political instability, a cultural offer exceptional quality and diversity of tourist facilities account for this tidal Tide summer.
1. The rain also has a silver lining here Well, that's not to hurt other tourist areas, but there is little in the south-east as the sun was to go from the beginning of August. Nice holiday in Alsace ... Paimpol or if they can get outside without having to leave a diving suit! "The weather played in our favor, it is undeniable, with late bookings from people who have waited before deciding" welcomes Michel Tschann, president of the union of hoteliers in Nice with 350 establishments, 14,000 rooms and 6,000 employees. Of course, sometimes it rains on the coast. But never for very long, with temperatures still mild, which do not prevent the walk or swim. And a small cloud of time (bad) time allows to visit the museums and monuments.
2. Geopolitical The misfortune of some does not delight others. But what has been called the "Arab Spring" - with the revolts of Tunisia, Egypt and to a lesser extent in Morocco - and the Greek crisis prompted tourists to prefer the 2011 Riviera. The fear of being stuck in a hotel or a strike at the airport has been full in the choice of a local tourism. This is true for the French, still many "down" days, even for northern Europeans, who preferred to play it safe this summer.
3. Do not sunbathe idiot Nice Jazz Festival, Jazz à Juan, Nights of the Suquet, those of the cloister of Cimiez, the Festival of Menton, the piano near Châteauneuf Grasse, concerts in Monaco ... Do not throw away, there is not enough evenings in the summer to see everything, hear everything. Add major museums (Picasso, Leger, Matisse, Chagall, Asian Art, Monaco Oceanographic ...) and special venues and you will know why people come here from around the world. "But be careful, cultural events are mainly concentrated in July, while August is calmer.Consideration should be given a better distribution "says the president of the hoteliers. In Grasse, Tourist Office says that in twelve years the "Route Napoleon" has attracted a new clientele. Many Italians, Germans, motorhome and motorcycle riders are not the emperor to cross the Alps. With the same interest "lavender road" that leads to the plateau of Valensole. Agriculture and culture go hand in hand!
4. The quality of the equipment Vacationers practice more zapping and are more loyal to a destination. This is because they were able to invest in modernizing their facilities as hotel Riviera and the Principality has managed to remain in the race. Coast is the second destination in France after Paris, France the first country in number of tourist visitors. Spa, steam room and Jacuzzi, WiFi and other services are increasingly common in hotels, residences and campsites in the region.

"Some articles were not really conducive to the image of the Principality and could almost be counted negatively! But the success of the union of Prince Albert and Princess Charlene will in the end, with time, helped to give a clear positive image of Monaco." "almost be counted negatively..." Almost, just almost - are these people stark raving mad! Really, just almost - you do not think that the articles were COMPLETELY negative? Really. Seriously, I am really serious, this article on the benefits of the wedding is the most ridiculous piece of spin I have ever read from the Monaco media. This article is a poster child of the crap that is spewed when you live in a country where there is no freedom of the press. No one in Monaco will ever report that this wedding was a big flop and actually resulted in a negative image for Monaco. What's really scary and proof that Monaco will not recover is that their economists are actually reporting that the huge media coverage is a plus because they would have had to spend 40 million euros if they were to pay for such media advertisement. You stupid idiots - - the media was actually mocking Monaco and saw its Prince and Princess as laughing stocks - purely pathetic! From Monaco Telecom:
Royal Wedding: 29 million according to government benefits
By B. Ulrich September 22, 2011
The Imse (Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) delivered its final verdict. According to his estimates, the royal wedding would have generated 19 million euros in direct and indirect benefits in the Principality during the festivities, 29 million by the end of 2011. Not bad even if it has not benefited everyone. The royal wedding a good deal? Yes and no.According to the results achieved by Imse recent weeks, it seems that those who were not directly affected by the event do not fired much. For others, the windfall was real.
Regarding the direct economic benefits, that is to say, those related to expenditures for the organization, they were valued at 14.9 million euros. Of this, 76% would have benefited local entities.
The picture is more nuanced for the indirect benefits which were related visitor spending throughout the duration of the festivities. The calculation was made taking into account the various dating sites, assessing the average expenditure of visitors, and finally through a survey of traders. The total of these indirect benefits would be $ 4.6 million.
Main beneficiaries, the restaurant industry (but only for facilities located close to events), hotels and shops related products. For the rest, RAS, dead calm although some services such as hair salons have made their butter.
However, the impact did not sum to four days of festivities. Even today, the "marriage effect" would still ongoing. The tourist, hospitality, retail trade and in others the benefit until the end of the year to 9 million euros for the final total benefits to 29 million euros. A calculation certainly less easy to appreciate and therefore subject to interpretation. However it is likely that a "glamorous touch" has helped attendance, which perhaps would not exist without marriage.
Finally, the government told the Argus de la Presse a study of the recovery media princely wedding. In total, the study sample (2000 fallout covering print, radio, TV and Internet) 745 pages were written, 534 on the air passages were recorded on the airwaves, on television, 15 hours of programs were devoted to the marriage on numerous channels. Media exposure, which in equivalent advertising would have cost 40 million euros in the Principality.
It may, however, raise the fact that all these effects were affected by the rumor, especially during the last days before the wedding have tarnished the image of the event. Some articles were not really conducive to the image of the Principality and could almost be counted negatively! But the success of the union of Prince Albert and Princess Charlene will in the end, with time, helped to give a clear positive image of Monaco. And therein lies the point.

Actually, the point is that you people are lunatics to think that Albert and Charlene make Monaco more glamours and gives it a positive image. Good luck with that. I guess you are writing this to try to convince yourself.

Is anyone surprised that Monaco is reporting that the wedding resulted in a direct and indirect benefit of €19 million ($25, 731,700) - which is the EXACT amount that they are reporting that the wedding cost - the EXACT amount?
Ironically, their report to show that local businesses weer the recipient of 76% of the direct cost of their wedding actually reveals their lie about the total cost of the wedding. There numerous very PUBLIC reports of non-Monaco expenditures that were in the millions of dollars. If you read the articles in the wedding prep thread, many were posted their. All the concert and wedding entertainers (which cost millions alone) were non-Monaco performers (Jarre from France, Eagles from US, Hartmann from SA, SA boy group, SA wedding singers, American and Italian opera singers, etc.) the flowers came from three different countries, souvenirs made outside of Monaco, dishes bought from the Netherlands, carpet and these are just the few that comes immediately to mind. This doesn't include all Charlene's jewelry and dresses and all the sponsors provided expenditures.
Monaco's new Economist group (IMSE - Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) just made complete fools of themselves and really rendered their organization a non-significant and laughing stocks. Who would believe an other reports that they published.

To me, I don't understand how they are able to state a specific number so definitely. One reason economics is such a hard science to study is that you cannot hold all conditions but the one you are studying, static in order to see the results, i.e., the princely wedding. The world keeps revolving. Changing economics can be the result of many things. Plus, wouldn't a measurement of GDP and whether it increased or decreased as a percentage be a more beneficial measurement. Also, they say indirect - how do they measure indirect? As you say MyaDia, they wanted the benefits to equal the 'reported' costs. Sounds like a wash and if they did a cost/benefit analysis BEFORE the event, that projected this result with the risk involved, most wouldn't do it. But shouldn't the wedding have been because we have two people madly in love and one is the Sovereign Prince and so the citizens want him to have a nice wedding? This may be why Albert has never found a true wife: he only looked at his potential marriage as a business adventure and never as a bonding with another person, and building a life together and family.
