Monte-Carlo - This week the eyes of the athletics world will be on the Principality of Monaco which is home to the headquarters of the IAAF. As well as the staging of the annual World Athletics Gala, Monaco will be a hive of administrative work, with a three-day sitting of the IAAF Council one of 19 meetings, workshops and assemblies which concerns the governing and organisation of the sport worldwide.
The IAAF family will gather to celebrate the 2011 World Athletics Gala at the Salle des Etoiles of the Sporting Club d’Eté on Saturday 12 November.
Hosted by International Athletic Foundation (IAF) Honorary President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and IAF & IAAF President Lamine Diack, the IAF World Athletics Gala will be highlighted by the announcement of the Male and Female World Athletes of the Year 2011.
The Gala will also give the sport the opportunity to mark further outstanding achievements via a number of other awards and honours including those for Performance of the Year, Rising Stars, Coaching Lifetime Achievement Award among others.
The Gala’s 600+ guests, who will include many of the world’s top athletics stars, past and present, will be entertained this year by Orquesta Broadway, a salsa, charanga dance band which for virtually 50 years has been at the forefront of the Latin Music scene in New York City. The band’s name comes from 135th Street and Broadway in Manhattan where the founding line-up all lived. A three-day meeting of the IAAF Council, Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 November, which will conclude with the decision regarding the host city for the 2017 IAAF World Championships, will be the focus of a packed schedule of meetings which will straddle the Gala. Gatherings of various IAAF Commissions, the IAF Council, the Samsung Diamond League Assembly and meetings between the IAAF and World Masters Athletics… are among those that will be staged before, during, and immediately following the weekend.
